For which devices and operating systems is BreadStorm available?

BreadStorm is available for Mac OS X 10.8+ and iPad iOS 7.0+.

The BreadStorm Reader is available for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch iOS 7.0+.

If you would like us to develop BreadStorm for a given operating system (such as, for example, Microsoft Windows, Windows Phone, Android), please email us and let us know of your interest.

Can I sync my BreadStorm database of bread formulas across my devices?

Yes. Sync works over WiFi on all of your devices: Mac, iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. You can sync BreadStorm with the BreadStorm Reader, and vice versa. Sync over WiFi is supported whenever your devices are on the same WiFi network, even if your internet service goes down.

What is a .bun file?

The .bun file is BreadStorm's native format for bread formulas. You can import .bun files created by fellow BreadStormers into your BreadStorm. To search the internet for BreadStorm bread formulas created by fellow BreadStormers, type the phrase "Download as BreadStorm .bun file" into any web search engine.

How do I back up my BreadStorm bread formulas?

On Mac: If you're running BreadStorm for Mac (either the free version, or a version unlocked with a BreadStorm Key), you can back up your BreadStorm database by going to menu BreadStormSave Backup....

On iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch: We recommend that you back up your BreadStorm database in the same way that you back up all of your iOS apps and data, for example, using iTunes or iCloud.

Does BreadStorm support grams? Kilograms? Ounces? Volumes?

BreadStorm supports both grams (g) and kilograms (kg) when entering, editing, and scaling bread formulas. BreadStorm does not support other units of weight nor volumetric measurements.

I don't know yet how to use baker's %, but I do weigh my bread-baking ingredients in g (or kg). Can I use BreadStorm?

Yes. To use BreadStorm, enter bread formulas using weights. BreadStorm will calculate baker's percentages for you. Many BreadStormers find this a fun and low-pressure way to learn baker's % on their own.

I'm interested in beta testing future versions of BreadStorm and providing feedback. How can I get involved?

We'd love to hear from you. Please email us (info@breadstorm.com) and tell us about yourself as a bread baker, and your interest in beta testing. Jacqueline will email you back within one business day with more information. We're perpetually beta testing new versions of BreadStorm. We enroll beta testers on a rolling basis, and we get to know each of our beta testers.

What can (can't) I do with the free version of BreadStorm for Mac?

With the free BreadStorm for Mac you can create 1 trial formula. You can edit, delete, and recreate the trial formula as many times as you like, to evaluate the software for your needs. You can scale the trial formula for baking. (You cannot export the trial formula as a .bun file, print it, nor take a snapshot of it.)

You can also import bread formulas created by fellow BreadStormers into the free BreadStorm for Mac. You can scale these formulas for your own baking, export them, print them, and take snapshots of them. (You cannot edit the formulas you've imported.)

Does the free version of BreadStorm for Mac expire?

No, the free version of BreadStorm for Mac does not expire.

If I buy a Key to unlock BreadStorm for Mac, what do I get?

You get the ability to create and edit an unlimited number of bread formulas on your Mac, without doing any math. (No more spreadsheets!) You can scale these formulas for your own baking. You can export these formulas as .bun files and share them with bread-baking colleagues, students, and/or friends—who can read and scale your formulas using the free BreadStorm.

If you like to print out your formulas and take them to the kitchen for baking, you have this option.

You get all of your bread formulas in an easy-to-search database, which you can backup and restore in seconds.

If you have a bread blog, bakery website, Facebook page, Twitter account, or any other social media presence, you can share links to interactive, scalable formulas on the web. BreadStorm for Mac generates these links for you. Here's an example of one: http://bunfiles.breadstorm.com/bunfiles/JUPQJ9/AANVZT/. You can also embed these interactive, scalable formulas in blogs and websites, and they look and work like this:

Search for other interactive formulas, published by fellow BreadStormers.

Is it worth it for me to buy a Key and unlock BreadStorm for Mac?

For some bread bakers, no. If you solely like to bake from formulas developed by other bread bakers, then the free BreadStorm is likely a good fit for you.

If you're a professional bread baker, serious home baker, or bread blogger and you enjoy—or rely on—developing your own bread formulas, we recommend that you buy a Key and unlock BreadStorm for Mac. (You can also develop and edit bread formulas with BreadStorm for iPad.) You'll benefit from being able to execute your formulation ideas in seconds, whether creating a new formula from scratch or tweaking an existing formula. You can forget about arithmetic and calculations—BreadStorm will handle these for you.

We also recommend buying a Key to those who want an easy-to-search, easy-to-backup database of bread formulas for research purposes, for education, or simply for the pleasure of baking. Entering a bread formula from a book, a blog, or the BBGA archive into BreadStorm takes 1-2 minutes, and the software catches any errors you might make. If you're writing a book on bread or are a researcher in bread science, you'll find BreadStorm an indispensable tool.
